'Sam Jewison: Every Time We Say Goodbye' Review

Review - 'Sam Jewison: Every Time We Say Goodbye', Library Concert Room, Scarborough, 20th August 2013

In just a few weeks time Sam Jewison will be starting a new chapter in his musical life as a student at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, something he has worked for his whole life.

His early years have concentrated on performing, arranging and directing locally around the Scarborough area so it seemed fitting that he wanted to treat his faithful followers to a rather spectacular finale concert in his home town. As Sam has more musical contacts than your average 18 year old it was no surprise that he was able to put together an impressive 10 piece swing orchestra and guest vocalist that wouldn’t have been out of place in some of the finest concert venues around the country.

The whole evening was directed by Sam, all the musical arrangements, conducting, playing, singing, he really can do everything and makes it look so easy! The concert featured Sam, Laurence Marshall and Robert Schmuck, Sam’s original jazz trio, who play together so well you’d think they’d been playing as a group for decades. Emma Button, with a real jazz voice, was the perfect partner for Sam to duet with and shows that he is a very fine singer as well as an excellent pianist. There were also some outstanding solos from Michael Thompson, Michael Grant and Laurence Marshall, whose drum solo in the finale number of I Got Rhythm was absolutely fantastic.

The evening flew by and I was amazed at just how much they had packed into two and a half hours, there was something for everyone and it was extremely well polished and delivered by all the performers. The whole audience showed its’ appreciation with a well deserved standing ovation which was their way of wishing Sam, and all the other musicians, the very best of luck with his musical career and we are all secretly hoping that we can make it to his first performance at the Royal Albert Hall as it surely can’t be far away now!
